A good number of electrical installations do not comply with minimum safety conditions to avoid electric or magnetic fields. Based on this, we must consider that the electrical installation is one of the most worrying factors in relation to electromagnetic pollution inside buildings, and perhaps to the least attention is paid.

The most common deficiencies found in electrical installations are usually:

– Grounding nonexistent or defective.
– Lack of control panel and protection.
– Poor wiring or incorrect section.
– Excessive load on drivers.
– Design in the form of a loop.

The wiring of buildings is a potential source of electromagnetic fields, and being close to people its biological effect is important.

A bioelectric installation is one that is carried out in such a way that it does not cause electric and / or magnetic fields that could affect the occupants of the building. It is easier to make a bioelectric installation in a new building than in an old building, although, in any case, it is always possible to apply corrective or mitigating measures in a poor installation.

When we speak of a poor installation, we do it from a bioelectrical point of view, although according to the regulations in force, it is technically correct. To create a good installation we need to have an electrical CAD software. The first is the attack of the building or the house that will be carried out preferably underground, and not aerial through the roof. With this, the electric field that can generate is eliminated, as well as the alteration of the visual environment caused by aerial cables distributed indiscriminately. Poor installation, due to a wiring of insufficient section for the voltage of the current or to a defective or non-existent earth electrode, can be the cause of the presence of electric fields of certain intensity, that affect the interior of the house and that , because of their proximity to people, they can be especially dangerous. For example, if you place the head of the bed attached to the wall where the cables of an incorrect installation are located, the head receives directly during the whole night the influence of the electric field that is derived from it.

The interior installation of a home or premises is made with those elements that allow the operation of electrical systems and appliances. It begins with the control and protection panel, follows with the scheme of distribution of the electrical conductors by the different dependencies of the dwelling or premises -with the correct section, taking into account the equipment to be used- and, finally, with the appropriate assignment of the connection points. The absence of the power control switch or the differential switch, or the low sensitivity of the switch, as well as conductors of insufficient and / or bad state, suppose a danger of overload, overheating, short circuits, fires, etc., and causes the generation of high electric fields, including magnetic fields.

It is important to foresee an adequate number of circuits, with their corresponding protection device over the phase conductor in each, that cover and diversify the needs of the different services, thus avoiding overloads. In this way, you can disconnect any of them independently in case of need (lighting section in a certain area, for example). Likewise, it is advisable to maintain an appropriate section for the power, for the type of cable and its insulation, as well as for the voltage and the length of the line.


The ideal condition

The ideal would be to design the electrical installations, so that in areas of extended stay, the fields caused by the installation itself were as low as possible or even non-existent. Next, we will list the steps to follow to perform a correct bioelectric installation.

In new installations, it is relatively easy to foresee that the electrical distribution of two adjoining rooms (cables, plugs …) fall on the same wall, leaving the rest of the walls free of any type of electrical installation. In any case, it is necessary to avoid that the cables -especially in non-bioelectrical installations-, are located on the walls where the beds or the furniture that accompanies them are resting.

The strips and the extensions effectively prolong the electrical installation, bringing it closer to people and therefore to the electric and / or magnetic fields that they can produce. Cables, strips and shielded extenders eliminate this problem, especially when cables passing behind the head of the bed generate electric and / or magnetic fields. Also as protective measures we can use disconnectors of the electrical installation and ferromagnetic paints and plates, etc.

The cables of the night lamps that are placed on the bedside tables can by contact or by proximity move the electric field to the body of the person in the bed. The same happens with the cables of electrical appliances, which can also be emitters of magnetic fields: radios, bases of cordless phones, mobiles …

We can eliminate electric fields near the places of extended stay: beds, place of work or study, suppressing the cables next to them. The bases of all plugs must have their corresponding grounding. Keep in mind that the walls do not shield the magnetic fields of electrical appliances and appliances, and that it could affect the next room, especially if the bed falls on the partition wall.

From the adjoining house, a faulty installation or a household appliance emitting electromagnetic radiation, can act on ours, altering our own electromagnetic environment. When the division of the dependencies of the house allows it, it is convenient to carry out the installation and distribution of the cables in the form of a spike, and avoid doing it in parallel. In this way, the appearance of magnetic fields due to closed circuits is prevented. The electrical distribution cables are taken to the different dependencies from a central conduit, thus avoiding the formation of closed circuits.

When the installation has deficiencies to prevent the appearance of fields in the vicinity of the beds, the part of the installation of the electrical supply network corresponding to the bedroom can be disconnected during the night, although the light can not be turned on from the bed during the night.

Another more efficient solution is the placement of an automatic relay for disconnecting the voltage so that, when there is no need for consumption, the relay automatically cuts off the network current of the selected circuit when it detects that there is no consumption, and reconnects it when electric demand is activated. When there is no consumption, this system transforms the alternating voltage of 220 volts, in continuous, and returns to restore the alternating voltage automatically, when its service is required. In this way, when there is no consumption, the chosen circuit of the electrical installation is automatically disconnected and reconnected when any light switch is operated. In the case of the bedroom, the incidence of electric fields can be solved, for example, avoiding its passage behind the head of the bed.

The grounding

Grounding is an element of great importance in a bioelectric installation. It is based on joining a point of an installation to ground, through an appropriate device. The objective of the grounding of an installation is the protection of electrical circuits. It also serves to protect users from the circuits themselves and to reduce the generation of electric fields.

A decisive factor in a correct earthing installation is the earth’s own resistivity: the lower the resistivity, the more efficient it is, so in areas with high resistivity it is advisable to water the ground regularly.

In bioelectric installations, the ground connection must have a maximum of 10 ohms. It is also important to place grounding plugs in the plugs, to avoid possible electric fields, but it must be borne in mind that it is not enough for the plugs to have an earth connection but this socket should be extended until it is in contact with the subsoil of the building.
